Program Dates
The program offers two sessions:
YYAS Online College Prep Workshop:
17th July – 22nd
July 2025 (6 days).
YYAS Residential Leadership Summit in Kenya:
9th
August – 17th August 2025 (9 days).
Participants can indicate their preference during the
application process and choose to attend one session.
Summer 2025 Offerings
The YYAS 2025 will offer two different programs:

Conducted virtually for
students across Africa.
Residential Leadership Summit:
Held in Kenya with a focus on
leadership and innovation.
Eligibility Requirements
To apply for the Yale Young African Scholars Program,
applicants must meet the following criteria:
Age:
To be eligible for YYAS in 2025, you must be born
between August 18, 2006, and July 17, 2011. This means you'll be 14 to 18 years
old during the program. Keep in mind that most YYAS students are typically 16
or 17 years old.
English:
You must be able to participate in a rigorous
academic curriculum conducted in English.
Citizenship:
You must be a citizen or permanent resident of
an African country. Note that YYAS will also accept applications from refugees
living in an African country.
School location:
You must currently attend school in an
African country.
Grade Level:
You must be a current 10th or 11th-grade
student (or the international equivalents).
Graduation date:
Your
graduation date depends on where you live. If you're in the Northern
Hemisphere, you must graduate between May or June 2026 and May or June 2027.
For those in the Southern Hemisphere, the graduation window is between November
or December 2025 and November or December 2026.
If you are currently in your final year or term of secondary
school, have already graduated secondary school, or are a university student,
then you are NOT eligible to apply.

Program Details
YYAS College Prep Workshop (Online)
The YYAS workshop is a six-day online program that can accommodate up to 200 students. To participate, you'll need a device with Zoom and a stable internet connection.
The workshop is designed to help you prepare for college and has strict attendance requirements. If you complete the program, you'll receive a YYAS Certificate of Completion that can be included in your university applications.
Best of all, there's no cost to participate!
YYAS Residential Leadership Summit (Kenya)
The YYAS Residential Leadership Summit is a nine-day program that will host approximately 100 students at a boarding school in Kenya.
The summit focuses on college preparation, leadership, and 21st-century skills. Just like the online workshop, attendance is mandatory.
All students who complete the program will receive a YYAS Certificate of Completion.
Best of all, the summit is tuition-free and includes free
lodging, meals, and educational materials.
Travel Grant
For students accepted to the YYAS Residential Leadership Summit, a limited number of need-based Travel Grants are available.
Students living outside of Kenya may apply for travel support, and all applicants are automatically considered for this grant.
Those who do not qualify for the Travel Grant must arrange
their own travel and documentation.
Application Timeline
The application process includes two deadlines:
Early Action Deadline:
24 October 2024, 11:59 PM ET.
Decisions released by 20 December 2024.
Regular Decision Deadline:
20 January 2025, 11:59 PM ET.
Decisions released by 20 March 2025.
How to Apply
Follow these steps to apply for the Yale Young African
Scholars Program:
Step 1
Review the
YYAS eligibility criteria.
Step 2
Review the
YYAS application required components.
Step 3
Review a PDF of a sample blank application, and start preparing to answer as many
application questions as possible.
Step 4
You will need
to submit contact information for a parent/guardian, teacher, and/or official
at your school. Reach out to them as soon as possible to review the PDF of a
sample blank application with you, and be sure to collect the information you
need.
Step 5
Click APPLY NOW to start your YYAS application. Be sure to write down your email and password to access the application at a later time.
Step 6
Check the
“Review” page of the application to see if you are missing any required
components, and re-visit any pages that require further information.
Step 7
Once your
application is complete, click on the “Review” page. Next click on the “Submit
Application” button at the bottom of the page.
Step 8
Check your
inbox for a YYAS confirmation receipt that indicates the successful submission
of your application. Confirmation emails usually arrive within 24-48 hours of
submission, due to occasional delays in payment processing.
